White to remain Springboks coach
South Africa coach Jake White
White's long-term future is still in doubt
Jake White looks set to stay as South Africa head coach despite being linked with the Rugby Football Union's new director of elite rugby position.

White showed interest in a move to England after talks about his Springboks future appeared to stall.

But he will remain in charge for the Tri-Nations tournament, although his long-term position remains uncertain.

"I want to state clearly that it remains a great honour and privilege to coach the Springboks," said White.

SA Rugby president Oregan Hoskins and chairman Mpumelelo Tshume, who met with White on Thursday, said talks had gone well.

I am very happy with the genuine approach and the sense of sincerity they have displayed around the issue of my contract

"We are pleased to say that the coach and the leadership of SA Rugby are totally aligned on the process to be followed regarding the issue of the extension of his contract," they insisted in a joint statement.

"He respects the fact that the president's council will deliberate on the matter and come up with a decision.

"Whether the president's council will immediately provide us with the final decision on this matter after its deliberations depends entirely on the council."

White was also happy with discussions.

"I am very happy with the genuine approach and the sense of sincerity they have displayed around the issue of my contract," he said.

"It was all a matter of seeking common understanding on future plans for all the parties involved in our rugby, particularly the national team."

The Springboks squad gathers on Monday ahead of their Tri-Nations campaign, which starts with Tests in Australia and New Zealand, followed by another one in Australia.

They then return to South Africa for three home Tests - two with the All Blacks, one with the Wallabies.

Sir Clive Woodward, Eddie Jones and Nick Mallett are also thought to be in the running for the RFU's director of elite rugby role.

Woodward is thought to be the favourite while former Wasps coach Warren Gatland is also expected to be in the frame.
