Brown given key role for Scotland
Kelly Brown and Craig Smith
Kelly Brown and Craig Smith will face the Barbarians
Border Reivers back-row forward Kelly Brown will start for a strong Scotland side against the Barbarians at Murrayfield on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old fills in for flanker Allister Hogg, who starts at number eight in place of Simon Taylor, recovering from surgery on his knee.

Brown has three caps after making a try-scoring debut in Romania last year.

Scott Lawson will start at hooker, which has proved a troublesome position for national coach Frank Hadden.

The Glasgow Warriors man will start alongside Edinburgh Gunners props Gavin Kerr and Craig Smith, who is included ahead of Bruce Douglas.

Hadden said: "Craig has done well when we've introduced him from the bench for his 20 minute flourishes.
We regard the contest against the Barbarians very much as a Test match
Frank Hadden

"He deserves the opportunity to start.

"Kelly was in our travelling squad in both Wales and Italy during the Six Nations Championship.

"He has played extremely well for the Borders this season and I need to see him perform at this level."

Brown played in the corresponding game last season at Pittodrie, when Scotland posted a historic 38-7 victory, their first against the Barbarians in 10 meetings.

Hadden has maintained a strong starting line-up as he prepares for the two-Test tour of South Africa next month.

He fields the same back division that started Scotlands Calcutta Cup win in February.

"We regard the contest against the Barbarians very much as a Test match," he said.

"We're looking to develop some of our attacking repertoire, but most of all we're looking to put in a performance.

"The Barbarians game is important both relative to the tour of South Africa and to next year's World Cup as we only have around a dozen games to prepare for the World Cup."

Meanwhile, Reivers pair Tommy McGee and Dougie Flockhart have been drafted into the Scotland A squad for the Churchill Cup.

McGee, who is set to join Leeds Tykes this summer, replaces Glasgow Warriors prop Stuart Corsar, who suffered a knee injury in the Celtic League game against Connacht on Friday.

Flockhart, who has recently joined Borders, takes over from full-back Stuart Moffat, who has withdrawn from the tour following his move to French club Castres.
