Southwell has been banned from playing cricket before internationals |
Full-back Hugo Southwell will not be punished by the Scottish Rugby Union after he played cricket against the wishes of national coach Frank Hadden. An SRU spokesman said: "Frank had a word with him and that's all forgotten about now.
"Hugo respects he should have sought permission before playing in the game.
"Frank explained to him that he shouldn't play cricket before international games. His occupation comes first."
Hadden voiced his concerns to Southwell ahead of internationals against Barbarians next week and the two-match Test tour of South Africa next month.
The former Edinburgh coach had already requested the withdrawal of international players for the final round of Celtic League fixtures this week.
He had wanted them to rest ahead of the showpiece games and was concerned that 26-year-old Southwell - who took three wickets for Heriot's and hit the winning runs against Edinburgh Accies - decided to play in the Masterton Trophy instead.
