Northampton pair Ben Cohen and Steve Thompson will miss England's two-Test tour of Australia this summer. The World Cup winners have both opted to rest in preparation for next season, with several other senior players also set to miss the two June Tests.
Wasps' Josh Lewsey has indicated he is unlikely to travel, while team-mates Lawrence Dallaglio, who needs surgery, and Simon Shaw could also be rested.
Captain Martin Corry may also be deemed in need of rest and recuperation.
Corry has signalled his desire to go on tour, and head coach Andy Robinson has to balance giving players a rest ahead of a long season leading into the World Cup with the need to deliver results. England have lost more Tests then they have won since being crowned world champions in November 2003, and have finished fourth in successive Six Nations campaigns.
Northampton's England A centre Jon Clarke, meanwhile, will not be heading either to Australia or to Canada for the Churchill Cup.
Clarke is to undergo a hernia operation that will require eight weeks' rehabilitation.
"The injury has been troubling me on and off, and I just don't want it to worry me next season," he said. "I should be back fresh for pre-season."
