Corry was keen to tour initially |
England captain Martin Corry will be rested for the summer tour to Australia, with Worcester flanker Pat Sanderson leading the side instead. "Along with a number of other players I think it is important Martin is rested for the summer tour," said England coach Andy Robinson on Friday.
"He has had a long season, preceded by the Lions tour, and it's crucial he has a summer off."
Robinson will name a 30-man squad for the Australia tour on Monday.
The world champions will play Australia in Sydney on 11 June and in Melbourne on 17 June.
Robinson said Sanderson was the perfect replacement for Corry.
"Like Martin he has the qualities I am looking for," said the England boss.
Sanderson has won nine caps |
"He has led Worcester Warriors well and made a complete return to form from the injury he sustained earlier in the season. "I'm sure he will do an excellent job for the side."
Corry said the decision not to tour was the right one.
"Andy and I had a good meeting this week," said the Leicester forward.
"While I would like to go on the tour, I also have to listen to his advice and what my body is telling me and have some rest before preparing for an exciting and challenging season next year."
Sanderson added: "My aim now is to take Martin's high standards with me to Australia.
"I was privileged to lead England in winning the Churchill Cup last summer.
"This is another huge honour for me and my family and I will do everything I can to help England perform well against the Wallabies."
