Coach backs 'outstanding' Moody

England boss Andy Robinson said he did not have to think twice about selecting Lewis Moody for Saturday's RBS Six Nations opener against Wales.

Moody has been banned twice this season, for a total of 15 weeks, and there are concerns about the Leicester flanker's temperament.

"I have got no doubt about Lewis Moody's self control," said Robinson.

"I was disappointed by his sending-off against Samoa but I believe he is an outstanding player."

Moody returned to action after his latest ban - for punching Alesana Tuilagi during England's win against Samoa in November - on Saturday.

He only played 40 minutes for Leicester against Sale and blotted his copybook by picking up a yellow card, but Robinson insisted he was unconcerned by the flanker's indiscretion.

"I thought he did well for the 40 minutes he was involved for Leicester at the weekend," said Robinson.

"When he tackled the guy in the air he had his eyes on the ball, and it just showed his enthusiasm for the game."

The coach added that he had no concerns that Moody would be short of match fitness after his latest spell on the sidelines.

"He's had nine weeks to focus on this game, and that is what his training has been about. He has been over in Finland working on his fitness," said Robinson.

Moody's first ban this season was a six-week suspension for punching Leeds' Jordan Crane in a Premiership match in September.

The flanker then picked up a nine-week ban after being sent off for punching Samoa's Tuilagi - a club mate of Moody's at Leicester - in November.

Moody has been working with a mental conditioner hired by Leicester, Paddy Mortimer, in an attempt to help him from losing control at crucial moments.

"Paddy is not a shrink," said Moody after Saturday's league game against Sale.

"He works on mental preparation on and off the field and the time I have spent with him has been very useful.

"He has advised me how to deal with situations and not lose control. I have played rugby for 10 years and not been done for foul play before this season."
