Dallaglio named on England bench

Dallaglio returns to the England 22 for the first time since 2004
Former captain Lawrence Dallaglio will be on the bench for England when they face Wales in their Six Nations opener on Saturday at Twickenham.

Martin Corry will captain the side, with Joe Worsley and Lewis Moody joining him in England's back row.

Mike Tindall and Jamie Noon continue their partnership in the centre with Harry Ellis at scrum-half.

Coach Andy Robinson makes three changes from last time out with Ellis, Worsley and prop Matt Stevens the new faces.

Ellis edges out Matt Dawson from the XV which started the 23-19 defeat by New Zealand in November, while Stevens comes in for the injured Phil Vickery and Worsley replaces another injury victim, Pat Sanderson, on the blind-side flank.

Dallaglio, 33, last appeared in an England shirt in 2004 before retiring for family reasons.

He returned to the international scene for last year's ill-fated Lions tour, only to find his tour ended in the first game by a serious ankle injury, and made himself available for England selection again at the start of this season.

During his absence Corry has become a fixture as England's number eight and Dallaglio has lost out to Wasps team-mate Worsley in the battle for the blind-side flanker's spot.

However, he has beaten off the challenges of Sale's Chris Jones and Gloucester's James Forrester to win a place among the replacements.

Tindall and Noon's centre partnership has been criticised as one-dimensional but once Olly Barkley dislocated his thumb earlier this month Robinson clearly felt he had few other options.

Josh Lewsey, tipped as a possible centre, continues at full-back with Tom Voyce edging James Simpson-Daniel for a place on the bench.

Leicester fly-half Andy Goode is also on the bench and will act as the back-up kicker to Hodgson, who is one point short of 200 in Test rugby.

  • Meanwhile, the lower tier of Twickenham's new south stand, holding just over 7,500 fans, is expected to be open for the match.

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has announced a safety certificate will be issued, subject to a number of minor works being completed by the building contractors.

The RFU has requested supporters with tickets for the new stand arrive at least 45 minutes before the 1530 GMT kick-off.
