A superb kicking display from Andy Goode gave Leicester an unlikely point against Premiership leaders Sale.

Sale had looked set for a runaway victory when Dean Schofield and Chris Jones both grounded tries for a 24-9 half-time lead.

But Leicester fought their way back into the match with six second-half penalties from Goode, who scored all of his side's 27 points.

His last effort five minutes from the final whistle guaranteed a draw.

Despite the impressive fightback, it proved a miserable return for England flanker Lewis Moody, who was sin-binned in his first game back from a nine-week ban.

And he did not return after the alloted 10 minutes, instead being replaced by Luke Abraham.

The Tigers looked surprisingly off-colour from the outset as they leaked two easy tries.

First Schofield went into the left-hand corner after heavy forward pressure and then Jones scored after picking holes in the Tigers' stretched defence.

But the home side reverted to type after the break, relying heavily on their forwards and the kicking prowess of Goode, which paid off in time for the final whistle.

  • Leicester coach Pat Howard:
"We were pretty poor in the first half. We changed our gameplan in the second half and simplified it.

"We held on to the ball and got the penalties."

  • Sale director of rugby Philippe Saint-Andre:
"A lot of people said we didn't have the hunger last week and I was pleased with the commitment and character we showed.

"There was a big improvement from last year when we were beaten here."
