Gordon Ross has impressed Hadden for Leeds |
Leeds Tykes stand-off Gordon Ross has won a recall in Scotland coach Frank Hadden's first, 32-strong Six Nations training squad. Ross's form means there is no place for Edinburgh Gunners' Phil Godman.
Centre Ben MacDougall and open-side flanker Andy Miller are the only uncapped players to be named.
The Border Reivers pair are joined in the squad by Glasgow Warriors captain Jon Petrie, who missed the autumn Tests through a shoulder injury.
Hadden explained that Ross's recent form in the Guinness Premiership has earned him a recall.
"I watched Gordon playing for Leeds against Bath last week and I've been keeping an eye on him generally," said the coach.
"The quality of his performance against Bath was out of the top drawer.
"Gordon was left out of the squad in the autumn, but he's responded to that by pushing his way back into contention through form."
Godman misses out despite finishing Scotland's last Test against New Zealand.
But Hadden stresses that it was a result of recent displays by Ross and Dan Parks rather than any dip in form by Godman.
"Phil could yet feature in the Six Nations," he said.
Scotland intensify their preparations for the Six Nations with a squad get-together at Murrayfield on Monday.
The Scots' opening match is against France at Murrayfield on Sunday 5 February, with Jason White confirmed as team captain for the campaign.
Hadden is pleased to see a rejuvenated Petrie - skipper for his first two Tests as national coach against the Barbarians and Romania last season - back in the frame.
"It's great to have him back," he said. "I'm satisfied with his form and I know he can contribute in other areas too."
As well as calling up 28-year-old MacDougall and 23-year-old Miller, Hadden noted that Nikki Walker had demonstrated a hunger in recent outings and that Euan Murray was benefiting from getting games under his belt.
He also stressed that Nathan Hines, the 31-times capped lock now with Perpignan, was not figuring at this stage for personal reasons.
"As I have said before, Nathan remains very much in my thoughts," he said.
"He has not retired from international rugby."
Edinburgh's Simon Cross and Rob Dewey, Borders' Simon Danielli, Scott Gray and Gregor Townsend, Glasgow's Donnie Macfadyen and Andrew Wilson, Robbie Russell of London Irish and Saracens' Iain Fullarton were not considered for the squad because of injuries.
