White captained Scotland in the autumn series |
Jason White will captain Scotland for their Six Nations campaign. The 27-year-old Sale Sharks flanker was skipper for Scotland's autumn international series against Argentina, Samoa and New Zealand.
His appointment by Scotland coach Frank Hadden followed an injury to previous captain Jon Petrie.
But the 49-times capped forward will continue in the post despite Petrie's return to action last month following surgery to his shoulder.
White will lead Scotland out when they open their campaign at home to France on 5 February and Hadden believes the player will overcome the additional burden of captaincy to produce some more fine displays.
"There is no guarantee you are going to sustain your form," Hadden said.
"There are so many aspects to the captaincy but Jason produced his three best Scotland performances in November.
"His work-rate has increased dramatically and that is his way of leading from the front.
"If we can guarantee that is the level he will perform at throughout the Six Nations it is as good a reason as any to give him the captaincy.
Hadden is considering switching the blind-side flanker to lock as a partner for Scott Murray to help combat England and France's heavyweight packs.
"When I spoke to Jason, I asked him if he would be prepared to play in the second row and he said yes," he said.
Hadden will name a training squad of 30 next Tuesday but White is relishing the chance to lead the team out again next month.
He said: "I really enjoyed being captain in the November Tests. To be asked to lead my country again is a vote of confidence from Frank.
"Personally, and as a group of players, we cannot wait for the championship to start and we look forward to putting in some better performances."
