Tom Varndell and Ben Gollings scored two tries each as defending champions England held onto their Dubai Sevens crown with a 28-26 win over Fiji. Fiji led twice in the first half but Varndell's pace and Gollings' guile gave Mike Friday's side victory in front of a capacity crowd of 30,000.
Fiji fought back from 28-19 down to trail by only two points in the closing stages, but their opponents held on.
Varndell also touched down in the 7-5 semi-final win over Samoa.
Fiji took an early lead with a try from Jone Daunivucu, but England hit back when Leicester wing Varndell crossed the line.
Mika Leawere quickly responded for Fiji, only for Gollings to score and convert for a 14-12 England lead at the break.
Gollings touched down again to open up a 21-12 advantage but Sireli Naqelevuki's try reduced the deficit to two points before Varndell went over in the corner for his second try of the match.
Gollings slotted the conversion for a 28-19 lead, which Fiji reduced to 28-26, yet England's crown was assured.
 | Varndell has had a wonderful tournament but he will need to keep his feet on the ground |
England had reached the final by beating Samoa 7-5 in the semis, with Varndell's last-minute converted try proving crucial.
And England coach Mike Friday singled out Varndell for praise.
"Tommy was sensational, that is true, but he is a young player and he has a few things still to learn," he said.
"That's why he's on the sevens circuit, to ensure he develops his game. He has had a wonderful tournament but he will need to keep his feet on the ground."
Varndell added: "I know if you let your feet get off the ground, there are guys who will knock you back to the floor."
