Haughton had a good tournament |
England lost 26-5 to New Zealand in the final of the Singapore Sevens after edging out Fiji in the semi-finals. Leicester's Dan Hipkiss scored a consolation try in the final after the favourites had built up a 21-0 lead.
England had squeezed past Australia 17-14 in the last eight and world champions Fiji 14-12 in the semis.
Fiji were ahead by five points but down to six men with a minute to go before Ben Gollings picked up a loose ball and scrambled over for the win.
But England were unable to maintain the same intensity in the final as Tafai Ioasa, Oremi Aii (two) and captain Liam Messam all scored tries for New Zealand to effectively wrap up victory before half-time.
"It has been a very hard week for the boys," said England coach Mike Friday. "Many of them were playing last weekend and then to come out here in the heat and humidity is a big ask.
"The All Blacks just had more in the legs than us at the end of the day and the better team won. But I was really pleased with the performance of the whole squad."
New Zealand are now virtually assured of winning a sixth consecutive IRB Sevens series title, with two tournaments left in London and Paris.
They lead the standings with 92 points, while England moved up to a share of second place with Fiji on 64.
Richard Haughton's try from halfway had earlier secured the 17-14 quarter-final win over Australia, and the Saracens wing was also on the mark in the win over Fiji as England recovered from 12-0 down.
They had finished top of their pool on Saturday ahead of Scotland, who went out 31-5 to New Zealand in the quarter-finals.
