Gregan is closing on Leonard's record |
Australia captain George Gregan has signed a new three-year contract with the Australian Rugby Union to take him through to the 2007 World Cup. The 31-year-old has also pledged his future to Super 12 club ACT Brumbies.
"I believe the Brumbies and the Wallabies have a lot of great rugby ahead," the scrum-half said. "And I'm excited at being part of that."
Gregan is Australia's most-capped player with 102, 12 short of the world record held by England's Jason Leonard.
He skippered the Wallabies at last year's World Cup, hosted by Australia, in which the home side lost to England in the final in Sydney. And is back at the helm to lead the Wallabies on their November tour to France, Scotland and England.
Since making his debut against Italy in 1994, Gregan has only missed only 10 Tests and Australia coach Eddie Jones is glad he has decided to extend his career.
"George has already achieved a lot in the game over the last 10 years and it's terrific to see him continue his commitment to the Wallabies and Australian rugby," said Jones.
"His professionalism, experience and leadership is without peer."
