Gregan targets World Cup
George Gregan
Gregan already has a century of Test caps
Wallabies captain George Gregan is bidding to represent his country at the 2007 World Cup.

The 31-year-old led Australia to last November's final and is planning to sign one last contract before retiring.

He said: "The World Cup is the ultimate prize and that would be the motivation, especially with what happened last year, when we came so close.

"I feel good and still want to become a better player. But, if I sign another contract, it will be the last."

Gregan is currently on a one-year contract with the Australian Rugby Union and is coming close to becoming the most capped player of all time.

Retired England prop Jason Leonard has 114 caps to Gregan's 101, but the Australian scrum-half is more interested in results than records.

He said: "I really enjoy the thrill of competition. That's what drives me. And we have a great team at the moment in terms of attitude and where they are heading."

Australia face South Africa in Johannesburg next week in the final match of this year's Tri-Nations.
