| Saturday, 15 February, 2003, 18:49 GMT England unhappy despite triumph
Clive Woodward's men came through 25-17, but failed to build on a 13-point lead with 20 minutes remaining. "I thought when Jason went over early in the second-half that we would blast them apart like two years ago," said coach Woodward. "However, we then produced the worst 25 minutes since I took over. "To have conceded three tries is disappointing, though I think even if the game had gone on longer we would still have won as we were fitter and better than them," he added. Woodward's feelings were echoed by the players. "It was the most disappointing second half I've had in an England jersey," said centre Will Greenwood. "We'll take the win, but it was just stop-start rubbish and it's really disappointing. "The game was there for the taking at 25-12. Two years ago we buried them but today we had our hand on the jugular but it just didn't happen. "We let them off the hook and we'll look long and hard at ourselves on Monday." Man of the match Jonny Wilkinson chipped in with 20 of England's 25 points and the fly-half was also muted in his assessment of the match. "It was one of those games that had its moments but then lost its way," he said. "If you go quiet for a couple of minutes against a side like France, they can get very noisy and they scored a couple of very good tries. "It got a bit anxious towards the end, but against a side like France you'll take any kind of a win." Skipper Martin Johnson also expressed his disappointment at England's failure to build on their hard-earned lead after Jason Robinson's try early in the second half.. "When Jason scored his try the game was there for us to dominate but we just mentally dropped off the pace and made a lot of mistakes. "We lost a bit of composure and kicked away a lot of ball when we should have held onto it. "It all made for a very frustrating end period of the game for us when we kept getting penalised." |
