Lomu finds Mitchell's favour
Jonah Lomu
Lomu is targeting his third World Cup campaign
Jonah Lomu is on course to secure a place in the New Zealand World Cup-squad after impressing coach John Mitchell on the autumn tour.

In our country we are very hard on him, we don't give him the credit he deserves
John Mitchell
The winger, the biggest name in the rugby world, struggled in domestic competition this season and was warned by Mitchell before the tour that he had to improve his all-round play if he wanted to be picked again.

Lomu starred with a rampant display against England at Twickenham, but was relatively quiet against France and Wales.

He has done enough to impress Mitchell, though, who said: "We have been pleased with his performances.

"When you see the smiling face, enjoying his work, helping others in the team because of the enormous amount of experience he has, then this tour has gone a long way to improving his self-esteem.

"In our country we are very hard on him. We don't give him the credit he deserves, but when he comes to this part of the world he does get that credit."

As well as rehabilitating Lomu, the tour has helped the development of a host of talented youngsters, giving Mitchell a group of about 50 players who will all be in contention for World Cup spots.

New Zealand have blooded their support players
"It has been great for me and (assistant coach) Robbie Deans to work with some very keen players," Mitchell said.

"It is a special time to be an All Black and some of the qualities shown on this tour make you feel very proud to be a New Zealander.

"There is a lot of footy to come. We have broadened our base as a nation. We have got an awful amount of competition for the team and that is very helpful for Rob and I and the selectors.

"It's great to know that in 2003 we will have a tough job in selecting the best 22 in the country and that is helpful."
