A hat-trick of tries by Andrew Maxwell helped Ulster finish off their Heineken Cup campaign with a win over Treviso. Maxwell notched a fourth minute opener and his two further tries extended Ulster's lead to 21-0 after 35 minutes.
Hooker Alvaro Tejeda hit back with two Treviso tries before half-time which left Ulster 21-14 ahead at the break.
Brendan Williams' try cut Ulster's lead but a brace of tries by Andrew Trimble and a Paddy Wallace score made the game safe despite Scott Palmer's late try.
Maxwell, back in the Ulster side for the first time in several months, showed his intent with his superb early score and more expansive back play enabled the winger to touch down again in the 21st minute.
A great move involving Isaac Boss, Paul Steinmetz and Trimble enabled Maxwell to complete his hat-trick in the 35th minute with Steinmetz's third successful conversion extending Ulster's lead to 21-0.
However, Treviso showed spirit in the closing minutes of the first half to notch two tries with hooker Tejeda forcing himself over the Ulster line on both occasions.
Tejeda's second try came after Trimble had been sin-binned for a dangerous tackle on Pablo Calanchini. Marius Goosen's successful conversions left Ulster only seven points ahead at the break.
Steinmetz extended Ulster's lead to 10 with a penalty after half-time but Williams gave Treviso hope when he notched another home try after Alessandro Troncon had gambled to take a quick tap penalty instead of accepting a certain three points.
Great breaks by Tommy Bowe and James Topping then set up Trimble and Paddy Wallace for tries although Palmer's response left Ulster only 10 points ahead with 11 minutes left.
However, Trimble showed his class again with a sublime finish when the chance didn't seem on to complete Ulster's deserved victory.
