 | HEINEKEN CUP POOL THREE |
Gareth Jenkins could scarcely conceal his disappointment as his Scarlets side suffered an early Heineken Cup exit. The Scarlets' European campaign ended after defeat to a last-gasp Northampton try at Stradey Park on Sunday.
Said Jenkins: "We won the performance but not the game - that's what it feels like. It's disappointing.
"We felt we owed ourselves a good performance and a result to try to get redemption out of this European competition. But we failed to do that."
The Scarlets led by five points going into the closing stages on a wet and windy afternoon in Llanelli and looked set to clinch the win which would have kept them in contention for the quarter-finals.
But with just two minutes left of normal time, a superb solo try by Northampton and England hooker Steve Thompson broke Scarlets hearts.
Jenkins added: "We adapted well to the weather conditions. The pack stood out as a great unit and dominated the game.
"But we've had one moment defensively that has cost us dearly.
"The challenge for us between now and the end of the season is to make sure we qualify for Europe next season."
