Sale Sharks ended their Heineken Cup campaign with a lacklustre display at Bourgoin's Stade Pierre Rajon.

The Zurich Premiership side were unable to qualify for the latter stages of the competiton and were playing solely for pride.

Sale coach Jim Mallinder made seven changes, including replacing England full-back Jason Robinson with Vaughan Going, but they were unable to live with a hungry Bourgoin.

The French club scored five tries but fell short of qualification for the Heineken Cup quarter-finals as one of the two best runners-up.

Home fly-half Alexandre Peclier kicked 18 points, while there were tries from full-back Anthony Forest (2), his older brother Mickael, Julien Bonnaire and hooker Noel Curnier.

For Sale, veteran Samoan Apollo Perelini and replacement Richard Wilks scored consolation tries.

But a disconsolate Bourgoin coach Philippe Saint-Andre said: "If we'd scored one more try we'd be satisfied now.

"Maybe we didn't take all our opportunities to score, but that's rugby. That's what makes sport so great.

"We were in a tough pool, while Biarritz had a weak team in Cardiff in their pool.

"If we'd been a bit more mature and a bit more experienced we would have won at Glasgow and we'd be in the quarter-finals.

"We just have to go back to the drawing board and qualify for the Heineken Cup next year."

One-sided

Bourgoin scored within three minutes after Peclier opted to kick to touch from a penalty and Curnier crashed over from the line-out.

Peclier and Sale's Charlie Hodgson swapped dropped goals before Anthony Forest raced 50 metres to touch down for his first try.

Peclier's conversion was followed by a second drop goal, a penalty goal and the conversion to Forest's second try on the half-hour mark.

By half-time Bourgoin had notched a 31-3 lead with another Peclier penalty.

Sale left any fight they had until the second half and went over through Perelini and Wilks.

But two more tries, from scrum-half Forest and Bonnaire, settled what was always a one-sided fixture.
