Foden highlights England improvement England full-back Ben Foden says some players were putting in 'unacceptable' performances 12 months ago. Foden played in both Test matches against Australia in June, including England's first win in Australia since their 2003 World Cup triumph. Foden told BBC Look East: "12 months ago, certain players were settling for six or seven out 10 performances, which is not acceptable. "Now, we're gelling as a team. Management are a lot more open." He added: "They've taken some responsibility but the players have as well. "They've got to learn as coaches, and we've got to learn as players." | "Myself and [fellow Northampton Saints player] Chris Ashton are fresh and we want to stick around for time to come" |
Foden has also backed England coach Martin Johnson's decision to stick with coaches Brian Smith and John Wells. "It's a sign of good judgement. He stuck by them and believed in them. It's the same with players - in my first game, I didn't play to my best. "You've got to have the belief to stick with people and you can develop from there." "Myself and [fellow Northampton player] Chris Ashton are fresh and we want to stick around for time to come." The change of mentality amongst the coaches and players is what Foden regards as having turned around England's fortunes. "Players need to get used to management and vice-versa. "We have an open door policy now so that whether you have three caps or 80, you can talk to each other and help each other. "It's building up nicely to the World Cup."
