Worcester outplayed newly-promoted Leeds at Sixways to record their first Guinness Premiership win of the season.

Willie Walker gave the hosts the lead with a penalty kick before Jonny Hepworth hit back with a try for Leeds.

Alex Grove touched down to edge Worcester ahead at half-time, and a penalty and a drop-goal from Walker extended the Warriors' lead.

A Walker penalty made it 19-7, before a Marcel Garvey try and another Walker three-pointer wrapped things up.

Despite a classy first-half try from centre Hepworth, and former England scrum-half Andy Gomarsall using his experience to good effect, Worcester were never seriously threatened.

And Leeds must now brace themselves for a tough run of games against London Irish, Northampton and Gloucester over the next three weeks.

Worcester showed no sign of a hangover after blowing a 17-0 lead against Northampton last week as Walker slotted an early penalty and the home forwards took charge from the kick-off.

However, Leeds stung the hosts from their first noteworthy attack, with Hepworth slicing through the Warriors' midfield for a fine touchdown.

Ceiron Thomas converted, but the lead lasted just four minutes, with Worcester's Grove powering over after a well-placed kick by Walker.

Walker's successful conversion gave the home side a 10-7 half-time advantage, and two penalties and a 40 metre drop-goal in four second-half minutes put Worcester firmly in charge.

Garvey finished the game as a contest when he darted over from 30 metres out, and not even a yellow card for Grove stalled Worcester's momentum, with Walker slotting another penalty for a 17-point haul.

Worcester director of rugby Mike Ruddock:
"We could have won at Northampton last weekend, and we've won tonight without hitting full throttle.

"It is nice to be top, even to be there fleetingly, but the most important thing was our performance.

"We needed to back up a passionate and energetic performance at Northampton last weekend, and that is what we did."

Leeds coach Neil Back:
"We scored an early try and got off to a good start. Overall, we were pleased with the first-half.

"The message at half-time was clear - to do the basics better and minimise the mistakes - but unfortunately, three kicks and a try took them 24-7 clear.

"The positives are we finished really strongly. But the players know they didn't play to their full potential."
