Leeds 9-9 Newcastle

Leeds (3) 9
Pens: Thomas 3

Newcastle (3) 9
Pens: Gopperth 3

Leeds v Newcastle

Ceiron Thomas scored a late penalty as Leeds marked their return to the Premiership with a disappointing low-scoring draw with Newcastle.

All of Leeds's points came from the boot of Thomas, although he missed two other attempts at goal.

Newcastle's Jimmy Gopperth matched his three penalties but also blew four attempts as both sides struggled.

The visitors led on three occasions but had to fight off a late rally as Leeds looked to secure a precious victory.

Leeds director of rugby Andy Key:
"All our preparation for the last 19 weeks has been about getting ready for this game.

"Once we knew we were playing Newcastle we felt it was a good opportunity and the boys felt really confident.

"It was not to be, but we will take the two points and move on. It was clear to see that we were a side that can compete and we looked the more ambitious side on the day."

Newcastle director of rugby Steve Bates:
"The lads are disappointed because they felt they had enough of the game to win it, but you need to take your opportunities when they are there.

"We were away from home against a Leeds team who had been preparing for this game for the past 19 weeks.

"I think they've done a good job, but is that what we are aiming for? No, but you've got to start somewhere."
