England went unbeaten through the opening day of the USA Sevens in San Diego but were knocked out by Kenya in Sunday's quarter-final. They then went down 21-14 to Fiji in the Plate semi-final to finish without silverware in San Diego.
Coach Ben Ryan was impressed by pool wins over Mexico, USA and South Africa after a troubled showing in New Zealand the previous weekend.
"We worked hard and the players have regained respect," he said.
New Zealand beat South Africa 27-12 in a nervy final at Petco Park to take their fourth successive tournament and a 32-point lead in the series overall.
Wales beat USA 21-19 in third-tier Bowl final to move to 11th overall while England are seventh and Scotland eighth.
