Gloucester booked their place in the Powergen Cup semi-finals with a hard-earned victory at Kingsholm. Three Henry Paul penalties gave them a 9-0 interval lead and second-half tries from Andy Gomarsall and Alex Brown sealed an efficient display.
Bristol, hoping to return to the Premiership next season, matched their West Country rivals early on.
But they could make no headway against a powerful home pack and ultimately ended pointless despite their efforts.
Bristol, top of National League One, started well with several encouraging forays into Gloucester territory.
But fly-half Jason Strange was unable to kick them ahead with a penalty chance in the seventh minute.
Paul returned the favour with a miss of his own before slotting an easier opportunity in the 18th minute to give the home side the lead.
He doubled the advantage when Bristol conceded a five-metre scrum after a half-break from Gloucester full-back Jon Goodridge, and then a penalty from the set-piece.
Referee Steve Lander warned Bristol about repeatedly infringing after Jim Brownrigg came in at the side of another ruck on the half-hour, Paul exacting further punishment.
Gloucester cranked up the pressure as half-time approached but lock Adam Eustace opted to hold onto the ball with wing Marcel Garvey free outside him, wasting a golden opportunity.
The omens were not good for the visitors when lock Ollie Hodge began the second half by throwing up on the pitch.
Bristol promptly conceded a sickening try when scrum-half Ross Blake tried to flick the ball up to centre Rob Higgitt after winning a scrum against the head close to their own line.
To Blake's horror his pass went straight to the alert Gomarsall, whose nagging persistence paid off as he had the simple task of touching down the loose ball.
Paul's conversion made it 16-0, and Gloucester might have extended the lead after a powerful burst from wing Seti Kiole, but Duncan McRae missed with a drop-goal attempt.
The clinching score came with 10 minutes left, and again there was an element of good fortune about it.
Gomarsall launched a box kick to the corner, but a wicked bounce wrong-footed Bristol replacement Adam Billig and Brown flopped over.
Bristol finished the match as they had started it, on the attack, but they could not find a way through.
