 | Worcester (14) 33 Tries: Hinshelwood, Sanderson, Vaili, Fortey, Brown Cons: Brown (4) Harlequins (7) 7 Try: Sherriff Con: Staunton |
Promoted Worcester have won their first game of the season in a well-worked display against fellow Premiership strugglers Harlequins. Prior to the match, both teams were rooted at the bottom of the table with just two points.
But Worcester looked the far hungrier of the two as they ran in tries from Ben Hinshelwood, Pat Sanderson, Saosi Vaili, Lee Fortey and James Brown.
Luke Sherriff crossed the line for Quins, but it was not enough.
Sanderson and Hinshelwood got Worcester off to a bright start, moving the home side 14-0 ahead after 16 minutes.
Much against the run of play, Harlequins managed to keep into the contest - cutting the deficit to just seven points when Sherriff bundled over in the wake of a fine line-out.
But the game was effectively over as a contest when Vaili powered over from close range, just moments after centre Thomas Lombard was held up just short of Quins' line.
Brown once again made no mistake with the conversion and got a try of his own in the final minute, three minutes after Fortey had guaranteed the additional point with Worcester's fourth try.
After the defeat, a concerned Harlequins coach Mark Evans said: "This is a serious situation - there is no hiding from that. This is as serious as it has been in my time here."
Former Quins star Sanderson, now plying his trade at Worcester said of the result: "I suppose that relieved is the word, rather than elated.
"The boys reacted brilliantly from a heavy defeat at Sale last week, and it showed the character of the squad."
