Gloucester maintained their perfect start to the season, sending Newcastle to their first defeat of the campaign.

A record 13,000 crowd at Kingsholm saw Marcel Garvey, Alex Brown and James Simpson-Daniel land tries.

Jonny Wilkinson kicked 12 points for the Falcons but gifted Gloucester their final try when a speculative pass was intercepted by Simpson-Daniel.

It ended a Newcastle revival in the second half, with Gloucester's forwards recapturing the initiative.

Newcastle boss Rob Andrew made several changes from the team that edged out Harlequins last weekend, although one was an enforced in midfield, where Joe Shaw replaced broken leg victim Mark Mayerhofler.

Wales captain Colin Charvis featured on the bench after making three successive league starts for his new club, while Gloucester were unchanged following their impressive 18-12 win at Northampton seven days ago.

I didn't think there was an awful lot in it and even up until midway through the second half I thought we might win
Newcastle boss Rob Andrew
Gloucester made the better start and were rewarded with two tries in five minutes.

Having conceded a penalty, they then committed another offence and were pushed back a further 10 metres.

Andy Gomarsall spotted space, kicked into the gap and, before Newcastle could regroup, Garvey gathered and sprinted over.

Then Adam Balding took a clean lineout catch and drove the Falcons forwards back before Brown touched down.

Wilkinson kicked three penalties during the second quarter, one from 50 metres, but further penalties from ensured a comfortable interval lead for the home side.

We have now won four out of four, and we are quite happy with that
Gloucester's director of rugby Nigel Melville
Newcastle made three changes at the break and responded positively, the home side forced into errors that left them unable to make the game safe.

Henry Paul's penalty seven minutes from time opened a 12-point gap and then came Wilkinson's error.

Wing Michael Stephenson ended the match in style with a mazy 60-metre effort to the line but it proved too little too late for the visitors.
