Coach Phil Davies saw Wales U20 finish the tournament on a high |
Wales Under-20s finished seventh in the IRB Junior World Championships after a late flourish saw them beat Fiji 39-15 in Santa Fe, Argentina on Monday. Fly-half Matthew Jarvis kicked six penalties to keep Wales just in front against the Pacific Islanders, who they had also beaten in the pool stage. Replacement back-row Morgan Allen's brace of tries and one from sub scrum-half Gareth Davies puled Wales clear. Jarvis added two conversions to finish with a personal tally of 22 points. It was a one place drop on last year's performance in Japan, while the 4th place in 2008 remains Wales' best performance in the fledgling tournament. Wales lost out on a place in the fifth-place play-off in a penalty shoot-out against hosts Argentina last Thursday, having drawn 19-19 before going into a scoreless sudden-death extra time and then losing the shoot-out 9-8. In the inaugural 2008 event hosted by Wales, the side coached by Patrick Horgan finished fourth and under current boss Phil Davies in 2009 they ended the tournament in sixth.
