Devon claimed the bragging rights over Cornwall with a 31-17 win in the first round of the County Championship. Cornwall started strongly in Camborne, a Mark Richards try and a penalty try giving them a 12-0 advantage. But Devon fought back strongly with two converted tries of their own, helping them into a 14-12 lead at the break. In the second-half, a Mark Bright try put Cornwall back in front, before Devon responded with three further tries to claim a comprehensive win. The visitors scored five tries in all, through Dave Ewers, a penalty try, Ed Lewsey, Shaun Michael Stephens and Keni Fisilau. Devon's Gary Kingdom also kicked three conversions for Graham Dawe's men as they claimed revenge for last year's 33-25 defeat. Cornwall must now beat Hertfordshire away next weekend, and then Gloucestershire at home to progress out of South Division One. Devon host Gloucestershire at the Brickfields next Saturday.
