Macdonald is following in his father's footsteps by becoming a referee |
Moseley fly-half Greg Macdonald is hoping to become a top-flight referee after retiring as a player. Macdonald, 28, has been released by Moseley after 10 years at the club. "My decision to retire was made easier by the fact that I wasn't in the first team. I played a few games at Sutton but didn't get the same buzz," he said. "I want to aspire to referee at the highest level that I can, Premiership or even international level if that's possible, and I'm still young enough." Macdonald has already taken charge of the National Under-20 Championship match between Oxford University and North Midlands, and is currently officiating in league matches across the West Midlands. | Being part of the side that got the club back into National One is the highlight of my career Moseley player-turned-referee Greg Macdonald |
He is following the path trodden by his father Colin who also switched from playing to refereeing, and has made the decision at a relatively tender age to increase his chances of going to the highest level. Macdonald's final game as a player for Moseley ended painfully as he suffered a broken ankle in the last match of the 2007/08 season against Sedgley Park. "It would be easy to be bitter about breaking my ankle in my last game for Moseley but I had some good times with them," he stressed. "Being part of the side that won the National Two title and got the club back into National One is probably the highlight of my career."
