2009's event will see some of the top clubs in the South West compete |
Plymouth Albion, the Cornish Pirates and Mounts Bay are among the sides who have committed to play in this summer's Newquay Surf Sevens. The inaugural event, held in 2008, was hailed as such a success that organisers have added a 10km charity fun run to the programme. It begins with a 15-a-side game between a Classic British Lions side and the Newquay Hornets on Friday, 17 July. The sevens tournament will take place on the following Saturday and Sunday. "The interest and desire from teams across the UK to once again be involved, after the success of 2008, is terrific," said tournament director Andy Hawken. "Many top rugby teams unable to be involved last year have now signed up early to ensure inclusion. "In fact, even at this very early stage there is only one place left in the top invitational competition." Last year's tournament, which was won by the British Army, saw a host of top professional sevens sides play for over 10,000 in prize money and raise 15,000 for local charities.
