Esher Director of Rugby Mike Schmid says his side did everything but win as they lost 13-18 at home to fourth placed Bedford.
The Surrey side are now 16 points adrift of safety from the newly restructured National League One.
Schmid told BBC Southern Counties Radio: "We did everything but win it.
"We're doing everything right until we get close to that try-line and we're panicking a bit and trying to force a score rather than let it happen."
Esher face a tough trip down to second placed Exeter next, Schmid wants the sort of performance his side have turned out in the last couple of weeks.
"We've got to continue to build our performances," he said.
"Two thirds of our game is very good at the moment but the decision-making we've got to keep working on."
"We've got to prepare for the second half of the season and we've got to start winning some games."
Schmid says his side need to turn 'almosts' into wins: "The guys are absolutely gutted and disappointed because they know they're close and they know they're not stepping over that try line as much as they need to.
"Our heads are down, we've got to lift them for next week and play as well as we can."
