Malvern grab win but Lucs go down

Malvern Rugby
Malvern win but stay on the bottom of Midlands One

Luctonians suffered only their second league defeat of the season, but Malvern followed up their EDF Cup win with a first league victory.

Lucs found themselves 22-0 down just after half-time at Kenilworth, before Leon Mells scored their first try.

Despite their best efforts Lucs could not get back in it and only Mells' last-minute try gave respectability.

Malvern followed up the win against Chester by hammering Bedford Athletic 34-0 at Spring Lane.

Malvern turned over a Bedford line-out and James Hynes rumbled through in the 26th minute to open the scoring, Chris Hooper converting for a half-time lead.

James Martin used his power to drive over in the 55th minute to open the flood gates, as three minutes later Hooper joined the line to put Greg Summers away for a score which the full-back converted.

With Malvern now dominant in all aspects of the game, it was the turn of Richard Fleming, who used his strength and pace to force his way through to score in the 63rd minute.

From the restart, Malvern gathered, went on another drive to the Bedford line, and scrum-half Jamie Gwynne took the ball from the back of the ruck to go over.

Fleming rounded off the day five minutes from the end as he once again broke Bedford's defensive line.

Luctonians stay top of Midlands One, a point ahead of Newport and Broadstreet, while - despite their first win - Malvern stay bottom, two points behind Bedford.
