Esher director of rugby Mike Schmid was delighted with his re-shaped squad after they beat Newbury to secure their second National One win of the season.
Esher remain fourth from bottom after running out 14-8 winners in what was billed as an early relegation decider.
Schmid told BBC Southern Counties Radio: "We had a good mix of guys that just wanted to win up there.
"It was about getting back to playing quality rugby. Certainly, the character and passion was there."
Mike Blakeburn marked his return to the Esher side after taking time out to concentrate on his career by scoring his side's only try of the game, much to Schmid's delight.
"Mike is a player that gives every ounce of everything to the team, he's a good leader, and has a good head on," said Schmid.
"Now he has a bit more time in his schedule we can look at him again."
Esher face fellow strugglers Manchester next and Schmid knows his side need another result.
"Again, a team we need to beat if we are to stay in this league," he added.
"The focus for us is character, passion and quality of performance. If we do that we'll win the game."
