Second home defeat for Southend

Southend versus Westcombe Park
Southend dropped to eighth in National League Two

Southend Rugby Club are still without a home victory this season after losing 25-35 to Westcombe Park on Saturday.

The home side took the lead at Warners Bridge Park through Tyson Lewis, before Richard Lankshear levelled the score immediately from the resulting restart.

A try from the away team's Gareth Inches plus three penalties gave them a 23-10 lead at the break, which Southend soon overturned through five penalties.

But Lankshear and Lee Campion hit back with a try apiece to secure the win.

Buoyed by their win away to Blackheath last weekend, Southend began the game as they had left off, when Lewis went under the posts in the first minute.

But Westcombe Park immediately levelled the scores with a try of their own by right-winger Richard Lankshire directly from the restart.

Things got worse for the Seasiders as the visitors converted three penalties to Southend's one, before Westcombe extended their lead with a converted Gareth Inches try, for a 23-10 lead.

Ben Green's men hit back after the break, thanks to 15 points from the boot of Andrew Frost, who had taken over kicking duties from Jake Sharp who was injured in the first half.

But it was not to be for Southend, as Westcombe Park responded with a second converted try from Lankshear against the run of play to re-take the lead, which was further extended by a chased-down try by Lee Campion.

Southend are now eighth in the National League Two table and will look to notch up their first home win this Saturday against third-placed Cambridge.
