Southend ran in five tries against Blackheath |
Southend Rugby Club defeated Blackheath 39-15 for their first ever win in National League Two. The Seasiders moved into fifth place in the league table after crossing over for five tries against a side they had never previously beaten. Blackheath scored the opening try of the game, before Southend hit back with four first-half tries for a 29-10 lead. A try apiece in the second-half took the score to 39-15, giving the Essex side five points from the afternoon. Both sides began their second game of the season with a penalty each, before the home side pushed over from a lineout, which was duly converted. These were to be their only points of the first half, as Southend went on their scoring spree. Mark Billings began by bursting through four Blackheath players after a 30-metre charge, which was converted by Saracens loanee Jake Sharpe. Scrum-half Rhys Powell added five more points to the Southend cause, following some fine wing-play from Tyson Lewis, who added a try of his own after sprinting the length of the pitch following an interception. Billings touched down for his second score of the day just before half-time, to effectively seal the points with a further 40 minutes still to play. A fifth try came soon after the resumption from Chris Green which, despite a second Blackheath try, ensured the first Southend victory under the stewardship of director of rugby Ben Green and head coach Mark Mapletoft.
