Burnett sees bright Grays future

New Grays Athletic manager Wayne Burnett believes his players are capable of turning their season around.

Burnett has taken charge of the club who are currently third-from-bottom of the Blue Square Premier, but told BBC Essex he felt they could soon progress.

"I don't think we are too far away and I've said that to my players," he said.

"Confidence can play a massive part in football, you don't become bad players overnight, and there are some very good players at this football club."

"I believe we can really achieve something here, but they have to believe that also," he continued.

If I feel the need to strengthen the squad I will do so, but at the moment I'm going to work with these players

"It doesn't need to just come from me and my staff, it needs to come from within the whole squad, they have to believe as much as me.

"We're going to work on some patterns of play and the way I want them to play.

"We're going to have some fun, but we're also going to work very hard."

Grays have already brought in defender Gavin Dayes and Luke Hickie from Burnett's former club, Fisher Athletic, on a non-contract basis.

But he does not envisage wholesale changes to his squad in the short term.

"I think it's going to take a while to get them how I want them to play, but they're good players so I don't think it will take them too long.

"If I feel the need to strengthen the squad I will do so, but at the moment I'm going to work with these players and we will see how they go over the next few days."
