New Zealand beat South Africa 26-12 to claim their first Hong Kong Sevens success since 2001 and all but seal an eighth world title in nine years.

Lote Raikabula scored two tries in the final for the Kiwis, who beat Wales in the quarter-finals before stretching their record winning streak to 42.

England, who have won four of the past five Hong Kong Sevens tournaments, went out to Samoa in the quarter-finals.

After beating Samoa 7-5 in the pool stage, England opened the scoring through Bristol's Anthony Elliott but Samoa pulled ahead with a converted try just before half-time.

Sale's Andrew Vilk raced 40m to score under the posts to give England a 12-7 advantage but two late Samoan scores sank coach Ben Ryan's side.

"Playing them twice in two days, one score between us, it's hard work," said coach Ben Ryan.

"I said yesterday, sevens is a knife edge. We came out on the right side yesterday, we didn't today.

"We've had very little preparation - only the time in Hong Kong - and there are youngsters out there who are putting their hearts and souls into the England shirt."

The Hong Kong Sevens is the fifth leg of the IRB Sevens World Series and New Zealand will look to wrap up victory in Australia next weekend, before the series moves to England then Scotland.

Wales coach Gareth Baber said of the Kiwis: "They are pretty unstoppable, but you've got to match them physically before you can get anywhere with them and we did that admirably."

Scotland were knocked out of the second-tier plate competition with a 7-5 quarter-final defeat to Argentina.
