England beat defending champions Samoa 7-5 to progress to Sunday's Hong Kong Sevens quarter-finals.

Ben Ryan's team, chasing a fifth title in Hong Kong in seven years, extended their 100% record following Pool B wins over Canada and Sri Lanka.

But Scotland's run of nine successive cup quarter-finals was ended with defeats to Kenya and China.

Wales qualified as a pool runner-up despite a lost to Fiji but must now face favourites New Zealand.

The Kiwis stretched their record streak of wins in the IRB Sevens World Series to 39 with their 47-7 victory over the United States.

England went behind to a first-half try from Samoa's Alafoti Fa'osilvia but remained resilient in defence before Simon Hunt barged over and Ben Gollings converted.

Samoa's Mikaele Pesamino was denied a stoppage-time score when he put a foot in touch as England held on.

"You don't need to win by 40 points, you just need to win," said Hunt.

After an surprise 19-12 loss to China, Scotland needed to beat Kenya to progress but struggled to combat the direct running and clean ball retention of the Africans.
