The England players were inconsolable after the defeat |
England have pledged to overcome the disappointment of their Women's World Cup final defeat to New Zealand. They put in a brave performance before losing 25-17 to the Black Ferns, who claimed the title for a third time.
"We couldn't have done any more," said flanker Georgia Stevens. "We played one of the best games of our lives."
Flanker Helen Clayton, who scored her side's second try, tried her best to be upbeat, insisting: "There is a great future for women's rugby in England."
England hit back from 20-10 down to run the holders close in Canada.
 | It was a tough game and you can't take anything away from the performance of the England girls |
"We went into this game as underdogs but we were really confident and believed we could win," said England captain Jo Yapp.
"We worked hard for 80 minutes and did everything we possibly could.
"It was a tough game and you can't take anything away from the performance of the England girls.
"This was a fantastic final for people to watch and it's brilliant that we have had such tremendous support in Canada and at home. I'm just sorry we couldn't deliver it on the day for them."
 | I am very disappointed... in fact, I'm gutted |
Both Stevens and Clayton announced their international retirements after Sunday's game in Edmonton.
"This is my last game for England and it will take a lot of getting over," said Clifton's Stevens.
Clayton, who plays for Saracens, added: "I am very disappointed. In fact, I'm gutted. We gave it our all but we could not finish it.
"Everyone in this team gave it 100%. We beat them in the pack and we shut down their key players.
"This was my final game for England. I am retiring, but we will be there in 2010 and we will be fighting as hard as we can."
