Macfadyen makes start for Scots
Ally Hogg and Donnie Macfadyen discuss tactics
Ally Hogg and Donnie Macfadyen will both face South Africa
Donnie Macfadyen will return to the Scotland starting line-up after a 19-month cap absence through injury as Scotland face South Africa in Durban.

The 26-year-old Glasgow Warriors open-side flanker had come on as a substitute in last week's non-cap match victory over the Barbarians.

Prop Bruce Douglas and second row Nathan Hines also return to the starting line-up.

Craig Smith, Ally Kellock and Kelly Brown drop to the bench.

Macfadyen's return means Ali Hogg, who has recovered from a knock, will occupy the number eight berth.

Saturday's game is the first of two summer Tests between the countries.
Saturday will give us a good indication of where we stand against one of the top sides in the world
Scotland coach Frank Hadden

Macfadyen won the last of his nine caps against South Africa at Murrayfield in 2004 and reappears for the 100th anniversary of the first contest between the countries.

The flanker, who spent 15 months out of the game with a recurring knee injury, impressed Scotland coach Frank Hadden in the 66-19 victory over the Barbarians.

Hadden said: "Donnie did well when he came on last week.

"He is an experienced international player and we believe he is the man for the occasion on Saturday."

Hogg moves to number eight in the absence of Lion Simon Taylor, who also missed the Barbarians game through injury.

Scott Lawson wins the nod at hooker, with Hines partnering Scott Murray in the second row.

"As ever, with selection it's a case of trying to keep a blend between continuity, competition for places and experience," added Hadden.

"We're very much looking forward to Saturday's match.

"We know Scotland have never beaten South Africa here and that the Springboks are unbeaten at home for the last two years.

"We also know that they represent a formidable physical challenge.

"We have made some progress this year and Saturday will give us a good indication of where we stand against one of the top sides in the world."

Scotland first played South Africa at Hampden Park in Glasgow on 17 November 1906 and won the match 6-0.
