Wallabies open with Maori test
Wendell Sailor in action for Australia A

Australia kick off their international season with a tough encounter against the New Zealand Maori in Perth on Saturday.

The Wallabies are looking to use the contest as a final tune-up for their two-Test series against Six Nations champions France later in June.

Coach Eddie Jones will test a new-look backline after his squad was hit by injuries during the Super 12 season and at their recent training camp.

Rugby league converts Wendell Sailor and Mat Rogers will both feature at the Subiaco Oval.

Sailor will start on the wing, while the plan is for Rogers to come on at half-time, playing at both fly-half and inside-centre.

Sailor admits it has not been easy to adapt his hard-running game to the needs of union.

"I play more of a power game than Mat and I have had to learn which lines to run and which holes to hit," he said.

While the Maori tussle does not have Test status, it is just as good for Sailor.

"It's my biggest game to date, and it's an absolutely huge opportunity for me to push for a regular place," he said.

"Even now it's hard for me to accept that I am going to start for the Wallabies.

"It's a surreal feeling. For years I've watched George Gregan and Matt Burke running around on the international scene - and now I am about to join them."

Coach Jones said of his new-look side: "Overall, what we're aiming for is more power up front, and more skill at the back."

Australia will need both those attributes against a Maori side who stake their reputations on playing not just for victory but for the pride of their people.

And with a number of capped and potential All Blacks in their ranks, the Wallabies are guaranteed a stiff test.
