Wigan's loss in the 2004 Challenge Cup final was Gregory's last game

At a tribunal in Manchester, Gregory withdrew any claim against Wigan, and the Warriors made an ex gratia payment of �17,500 to him.

Gregory left Wigan because of a degenerative muscular disease that has prevented him from coaching since 2004.

Wigan had paid up his contract in full, but Gregory made an extra claim under disability legislation.

The club had intended to resist his claim at the tribunal.

But Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay said: "Having seen Mike at the hearing we realised that his health had deteriorated further.

"We instructed our barrister that under no circumstances was he to cross examine Mike in the witness box.

"We would not have been comfortable with putting him through that stress."

Lindsay added: "We made a payment of �17,500 although it was officially confirmed that Mike was making no claim for the loss of earnings.

"We had honoured every penny of our contractual obligation.

"Now that the matter is officially ended we wish Mike all the luck in dealing with his sad illness. He and his family have our utmost sympathy."

Gregory took over as head coach at Wigan in 2003 after Stuart Raper's departure, but was forced to step down after the 2004 Challenge Cup final.
