Carney looks to short-term future

Warrington winger Brian Carney has insisted his sole attention is on making the Wolves first team, and not where his future lies.

The ex-Wigan and GB man could make his debut against Catalans this weekend if the Irish Rugby Football Union let him end his deal with them early.

He told BBC Radio Manchester: "I am not looking past trying to make this team.

"I think a lot of things will be answered after I play. Hopefully I'll get into the team and play well."

He continued: "It suits me to join Warrington until the end of the season and now I've just got to try to make this team, try to push for a spot in this team and, if I do get a spot in this team, I've just got to try to play well. That's enough for me to deal with at the moment."

While he awaits a decision from Dublin, Carney confirmed he will make himself available for Ireland's league clashes with Serbia in Limerick on 17 October and the trip to Bridgend to take on Wales on 1 November.

Carney's last rugby league match was for Great Britain in the 2006 Tri-Nations Series, just before the national team was split four ways, initially for the World Cup and now for the Four Nations and the European Cup.

His decision to join the Irish camp is a fillip for coach Andy Kelly and team organisers Terry O'Connor and Barrie McDermott.

When in union, Carney made 19 appearances for Munster and won four caps for Ireland.
