Former Leigh caretaker coach Tommy Martyn says he is looking for a career outside rugby league after failing to land the job on a permanent basis.
The former St Helens stand-off, 34, filled in after Darren Abram left but Tony Benson got the post full-time.
"I wanted the job but withdrew my application when I was told I wouldn't be considered as I did not have Super League-level experience," he said.
"I am so disillusioned I plan to look for a career outside the game."
Martyn scored 127 tries in 211 appearances for Saints and was the Lance Todd Trophy winner in the 1997 Challenge Cup final, but was never capped.
He helped Leigh win promotion to Super League last season but worked as Abram's assistant during the Centurions' ill-fated top flight campaign.
"The last year has knocked the hell out of me and it's time to spend more time with my wife and family," he said.
"I've had a marvellous career with 17 years in the sport, with the best times at St Helens."
