Hull KR have launched an ambitious attempt to bring Australia captain Darren Lockyer to Craven Park for the 2010 Super League season.

Rovers coach Justin Morgan has confirmed he has made an initial enquiry about signing the 31-year-old.

Lockyer's agent George Mimis has said that "five or six" Super League clubs have also expressed an interest in signing the Brisbane Broncos player.

The former Golden Boot winner is contracted to the Broncos until 2009.

Lockyer told BBC Sport last year that he would be interested in playing in Super League at some stage in his career.

"If the body still feels as good as it does now, then it's definitely an option," he said at the time.

Lockyer was voted as the best player in the world in 2003 and 2006, but last year a serious injury forced him to undergo a knee reconstruction.

He has returned to action in Australia's NRL with Brisbane this season, but has been troubled by problems with his knee in recent weeks.

Morgan, who played against Lockyer in the NRL before becoming a coach, said Hull KR would like to sign the talented stand-off.

"The ball is now in Darren's court," he tod the Hull Daily Mail.

"We are one of the clubs who have expressed an interest in Darren and we want to see how much desire Darren has in playing for us in England.

"We'd love to take that interest further, but I expect we'll face competition from other Super League clubs.

"Rovers are a very attractive club for Darren to come to."

But Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan said his club were not among the Super League sides pursuing Lockyer.

"We've had no conversation with his agent," said Lenagan.

"Darren Lockyer is a great player - there's no doubt about that - but at this stage we've expressed no interest."

Meanwhile, Mimis said the interest from Super League was par for the course for a player of Lockyer's calibre.

"Each year there's interest," Mimis told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"This year, at least five clubs, maybe six, would be interested.

"Super League would feature as one of the discussion points. It's a possibility. He's enjoyed the time he's had, football-wise, over there.

"He's enjoyed travelling there on a couple of occasions socially as well. He doesn't dislike the whole environment."
