 Lockyer needs at least six months' rehabilitation after surgery |
Brisbane Broncos and Australia stand-off Darren Lockyer has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a serious knee injury. He will need a knee reconstruction and up to nine months' rehabilitation after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament playing for his club side.
Lockyer will miss Australia's game against New Zealand on 14 October.
He will also now be forced out of his guest role on the New Zealand 'All Golds' trip to Britain in October.
The loss of Lockyer will be a huge setback to the reigning National Rugby League champions, who lie fourth in the table after recovering from a disastrous start to the season.
The Broncos' club doctor said he suffered the injury early in the second half of their 24-16 win over North Queensland, but played on, only to be forced off later on in the match.
"I am disappointed but I can't do anything about it," said Lockyer.
"Sometimes things like this happen. I have seen a lot of my mates have to go through things like this.
"It is going to be a whole new challenge for me, but what's done is done."
