Byrne faces lengthy Hull lay-off

Hull full-back Todd Byrne is unlikely to play again this season

Hull FC full-back Todd Byrne faces a long spell on the sidelines after being told he must undergo knee surgery.

The 30-year-old Aussie has torn his anterior cruciate ligament and needs a knee reconstruction operation.

Byrne suffered the injury early on in the win at Celtic Crusaders 12 days ago only to return to the field.

Initially it was thought that the injury was not severe but after the knee began to swell an MRI scan and arthroscope diagnosed the full damage.

Byrne, in his second season after signing from New Zealand Warriors in November 2007, has to wait a month to allow the knee to settle before he can undergo surgery.

Head coach Richard Agar told the club website: "This is a blow for us and Todd.

"He is a player we are going to miss because he has made a big contribution during the time he has been at the club.

"He is such a versatile player and so enthusiastic."
