Richard Horne scored his 100th try for Hull in the 75th minute |
Hull maintained their unbeaten start to the Super League season with a home victory over the Catalans Dragons. Shaun Berrigan opened the try-scoring in the 25th minute before Craig Hall added a second minutes later to give the home side a 14-0 half-time lead. Olivier Elima pulled a try back for the Dragons, but tries from Tom Briscoe and Richard Horne sealed the home win, along with 12 points from Danny Tickle. Catalans added a consolation try through Adam Mogg's late score. The victory ensures the Airlie Birds maintain their 100% winning start to the season. Tickle opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a penalty after Kirk Yeaman was illegally held down in the tackle in Hull's first foray into Catalans territory . The score stiffened Hull's resolve and they were rewarded for their endeavours when Berrigan took advantage of a fortunate ricochet off the post to touch down under the sticks. Hall, playing at full-back in the absence of Todd Byrne, scored the second when he latched on to Chris Thorman's kick two minutes before the break. Briscoe came to Hull's rescue at the start of the second half when he denied Clint Greenshields a try, but Elima managed to open the French side's account when he barged over from close range, with Thomas Bosc added the extras. But after declining two kickable penalty attempts, Hull turned their territorial advantage into points when Mark Calderwood's burst set up opposite winger Briscoe to touch down. Horne wrapped up the comfortable victory in the 75th minute as he claimed his 100th try for the club. Tickle maintained his perfect goalkicking record with the conversion and even Mogg's late try could not detract from a satisfying Hull performance.
Hull coach Richard Agar on Horne's 100th club try: "It's a bit of a fairy story for Rich after what has gone on in his life over the last 18 months and I hope it continues. "We were rock-solid in defence and built our game around that. I still think there is enough improving in us to suggest we can become a better team. "Down their end, we need polishing up and I'm not sure about conceding these last-minute tries, it leaves us finishing a little untidily. "But it is round three - if we are still doing it in round 23 we might have a problem." Catalans coach Kevin Walters: "Hull were very good and we left our discipline in Perpignan. "I can't fault the effort and they defended well in patches but when you look up at the scoreboard and see 28 points, it's a bit of a touch-up. "Hull got some good stuff happening for them and are playing some good football. You need to be on your game to beat them."
