Reilly's testimonial game takes place against Leeds on 26 January |
Huddersfield stalwart Paul Reilly wants to make his final season in the professional game one to remember. The 30-year-old full-back will retire at the end of the 2007 campaign but thinks the 2006 Challenge Cup finalists can make a big impact in his last year.
"Why not? I will be surprised if there are many teams fitter than us and I cannot wait for the season to start," said the former England international.
"I want to finish on a high. It's important for me I go out with a bang."
Huddersfield, coached by Jon Sharp, head for a pre-season training camp in Portugal in mid-January before stepping up their preparations for Super League XII.
They host Wigan on 21 January before taking on Leeds in a game that doubles up as a testimonial match for Reilly, who has spent more than 10 years with the Giants.
The clash against the Rhinos at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium on 26 January will be a joint affair with Huddersfield-born centre Keith Senior.
"Keith's a good lad and he's done a lot for the game," said Reilly. "I'll be proud to walk out with him."
Huddersfield, who lost 42-12 to the all-conquering St Helens in last year's Challenge Cup final at Twickenham, finished seventh in Super League XI.
But they have been busy in the off-season, releasing several players, among them Michael De Vere and Albert Torrens, and signings the likes of John Skandalis and Jamahl Lolesi, two players from NRL side Wests Tigers.
They have also recruited hooker Ryan Hudson, who is making his return to the game following a two-year doping ban.
The Giants kick off their Super League campaign at home to reigning champions Saints on 4 February.
