Ian Smith's refereeing decisions proved the catalyst for the trouble |
Castleford Tigers have began an investigation into alleged crowd trouble during their Super League defeat by Catalans at the Jungle. Plastic bottles were thrown onto the pitch at the end of the game and Dragons players were pelted with beer. Chief executive Richard Wright said: "We will now be meeting with our safety and security people to determine how best we can avoid a repetition." The Rugby Football League is waiting on the officials' match report. Tigers fans were incensed by referee Ian Smith's performance, after he made numerous controversial calls in the Catalan side's 22-20 win in West Yorkshire. Wright explained: "I spoke with many fans at the end of the game as they felt bitterly disappointed with some of the referee's decisions. "However there can be no justification in any circumstances for items to be thrown onto the pitch and if incidents like this do occur, it can only harm the club in the long term. "Furthermore, if we are able to identify anyone who threw a bottle, then we will ban them from the Jungle."
